Getting started

You need to be 17 to start learning to drive and have a valid provisional licence before you take your first driving lessons. To apply for this, you must complete the application form D1 that's available from either the 'Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) form ordering service', or from your local Post Office.

Apply for a provisional licence up to three months before your 17th birthday, and you could book your first driving lesson for the big day!

It Helps To Read

Useful for all road-users in England, Scotland and Wales, this book contains the rules of the road, some of which are legal requirements and must be adhered to, in order to avoid penalty - fines, penalty points, disqualification or even prison. It also includes a reference for the rules to the legislation that creates the offence. and remember if you don't abide by them, you'll be breaking the law and could end up being prosecuted. This could lead to you losing your licence, so it's worth getting to know what's what!

 Theory Test

The theory test is a 50-question multiple-choice test. To pass you must answer 43 or more questions correctly within 57 minutes. Questions are chosen at random from a bank of over 1,000 questions, and you answer by touching the screen. During the test you have the option to skip questions and return to them later.

Immediately after your theory test, you'll watch a series of 14 one-minute video clips, each showing potential hazards involving road conditions, pedestrians or road users.

There are 15 hazards to identify and you can score up to 5 points on each one, depending on how quickly you identify them. You need to score 44 out of 75 to pass.

You'll need to pass both parts to successfully complete your theory test. If you pass one part and fail the other, you'll fail the whole test, and will have to take both parts again.

 practical test

Before you do any driving you'll be asked to perform an eyesight check and then be asked some vehicle safety questions. You'll then be tested on your general driving ability, including two reversing exercises. In your practical test, you have 40 minutes to demonstrate everything you have learned in your driving lessons. You need to show you can drive competently and safely in all kinds of driving situations.

To pass, you will have to complete the test with no serious faults, and you must have 15 or fewer minor errors.
